LIBRARY
WelcomeAt Newington, the Library provides the basis of research, study and writing skills from Year 7 through to the HSC. Supervised by a staff of qualified teachers and librarians, the collection consists of books, serials, DVDs, CDs, video and audio tapes and Internet access. The Library's Spydus catalogue can be accessed remotely through the Library web site, which also allows access to a wide range of subscription online resources. An active acquisitions program, geared to the NSW Board of Studies curriculum, includes a special collection of support material for HSC students, kept current by regular purchases from the State Library of NSW. Students visit the Library under the direction of their subject teachers and undertake structured and monitored research programs. From Year 7, students are practiced in the skills and methodology required for library research and in the location of reference materials in both Newington’s Library and external resource centres. Computer support and the Internet are an essential component. Critical analysis and summary techniques are cultivated and, in preparation for HSC examinations and beyond, research techniques are further reinforced with a skills program covering citation and bibliographic proficiency, in accordance with MLA (Modern Languages Association) criteria. Life-long reading habits are encouraged through the Years 7-10 Wide Reading Program, an annual Writing Competition, author visits and the biennial Newington Literature Festival. |
