Motivated TO EXCEL
The pursuit and recognition of excellence is a fundamental driver of all Newington policies and programs. Our results in external examinations and competitions are of consistent high standards, our sportsmen are well respected and our musicians, artists and actors move on to lead professional lives in their chosen fields. Newington College encourages boys to be curious, spirited and self confident, to take on new ventures and extend and adapt themselves to respond to whatever comes their way. We understand that boys need to feel valued for their contributions and safe to make mistakes in order to achieve and succeed. Newington’s small class sizes and diverse subject selections encourage boys to explore new horizons and extend themselves to take on new challenges. Learning programs aim to inspire a sense of wonder and an appreciation for the widest range of interests. Hands on activities, active classrooms, healthy competition, camps and outdoor learning programs are just a few of the ways that boys develop a broader sense of themselves and their abilities, learn to interact with a wide group of ages and talents and acquire useful skills for adulthood.
Although quite comprehensive in our intake, we believe that boys respond to well-presented challenges, whether in the classroom, the studio, the laboratory, on the stage or on the playing field. We endeavour to provide a balanced mix of such challenges to suit each individual student, with the result that overall performance is very high. The full gamut of boys’ achievement and success is recognised, from the end of year Prize Giving, special honours in assembly for effort or ‘neat writing’ or the applause from the audience at the end of a musical performance. Newington boys know that achievement is not limited to coming first or winning, but is about extending their own boundaries. Nevertheless, our long traditions mean that there is kudos for those who represent the College in various endeavours. Boys strive for the prestige that is associated with these positions and applaud those who have achieved this status. |
