COMMUNITYSPIRIT
Service Learning ProgramThe Newington College Service Learning Program was launched in 2008. It is designed to educate our students about their individual roles and responsibilities within the broader community. The program’s activities are designed to enhance our boys’ awareness of the inequities that exist within our local, national and global communities. It aims to facilitate practical opportunities for boys to work alongside charity workers and community volunteers and in doing so, develop a greater sense of empathy for their fellow ‘man’. We are already developing close relationships with five domestic and international charities and two overseas schools; one in Nepal and the other in Tonga. These organisations are: The Fred Hollows Foundation – Australian and international blindness prevention and surgery to cure cataract blindness in poor communities The Tear Foundation – Addressing the causes and results of poverty internationally CanTeen – kids living with cancer The Salvation Army Oasis Foundation – homelessness and young people at risk in our community The Exodus Foundation – Loaves & Fishes Free Restaurant. Community welfare for disadvantaged and marginalised people. The Newington Service Learning Association was formed in May, 2009 to provide assistance to the service learning programs of Newington College. It is a sub-committee of the Parents & Friends.
