Newington boy selected in Australian Schoolboys’ Rugby Team

Year 11 student at Newington, Hugh Roach, has been honoured with the highest accolade in schoolboy rugby, with the announcement of his selection in the Australian Schoolboys’ Rugby team.

Hugh was selected in the GPS (Great Public School) 1st XV Rugby team as hooker earlier in 2009. He then showed exceptional talent at the National Championships held at Knox Grammar, impressing the selectors for the Australian team. This is an outstanding achievement for a boy who is still only in Year 11, and is testament to his versatility on the rugby field.

Hugh recently played for the Australian Schoolboys’ squad against the New Zealand Schoolboys at Ballymore in Brisbane. His performance was so impressive that Hugh made the final cut in the Australian Schoolboys’ team, which was announced recently.

Newington honoured by visit from one of the oldest surviving fuzzy wuzzy angels

Newington was recently honoured by a visit from one of the oldest surviving Papua New Guinean nationals who assisted the Australian soldiers on the Kokoda Track during World War II, Mr Frederick Soka.

Frederick came to Newington to address the Year 10 History students about his experiences in assisting Australia’s diggers during the World War II campaign. The compassion and care of the casualties earned Frederick and his fellow villagers enormous admiration and respect from the Australians, who dubbed these men their ‘fuzzy wuzzy angels’.

Frederick explained to the boys that he helped by taking in all the provisions, including ammunition, guns, food and medical supplies. The wounded were then carried out of the Kokoda Track to the nearest airfield, or all the way back to Port Moresby.

Newington retains the AJ Rae Shield over Trinity

In a competition that looks like rivaling the State of Origin in terms of passion for a premier sporting event, Newington College has retained the AJ Rae Shield over Trinity Grammar.

The AJ Rae Shield began in 2004, when the Headmasters of Newington and Trinity decided to create a competition to honour the role played by a much-loved educator at both schools, Mr Anthony (Tony) Rae. He was Senior Master at Trinity and Headmaster at Newington College.

The Shield is contested whenever the two schools play each other in Rugby and Football, with the A level teams in each sport, from the 13s age group right through to the Opens, playing each other in the annual clash. Honour for the school is on the line, and each boy plays with fierce determination in order to secure victory.

‘Tahs teach boys how to be green

Newington’s Wyvern House Preparatory School hosted the launch of an exciting new online education program, designed to motivate and engage children in Years 3 to 6 about how to protect our environment.

The program, called Visy Enviromaniacs, has been developed by educational experts and is complemented by a comprehensive lesson plan which supports the primary school curriculum.

The games, covering recycling, energy, water, litter and packaging are all interlinked. The boys learn that recycling is a key weapon in the fight against climate change and by recycling, we save energy, reduce our water usage, clean up and dispose of litter and reuse packaging.

The game and lesson plan can be accessed online at no cost to students, parents or teachers.

Waratah rugby stars Lachie Turner and Tatafu Polota-Nau officially unveiled the program at Newington, which is the school where Turner played junior rugby.

New sound system at Lindfield
Newington teachers and students try out the new sound system

Newington Significantly Enhances Boys' Learning

Newington College’s Preparatory School at Lindfield has installed a revolutionary new sound system that will have a significant impact on improving learning outcomes for boys at the school.

Normally, from the back of the room, students only hear 80% of what is being said. The key difference of this system is that it uses infra-red light waves to project sound. With the microphone on the teacher, 100% of what is being said can be heard by all boys in the room.

Research shows when messages are heard more clearly, it can improve a child’s learning by up to 33%. One Year 6 teacher has found that the boys are now much quieter, so he has trained himself to talk more softly. There is no need to project his voice to the back of the room any more, which has the added benefit of reducing vocal fatigue.

It is not only the teachers who have a microphone. The boys also have their own microphone for times when they have to address the class, such as sharing their news, or delivering a PowerPoint presentation.

Human Swine Influenza — latest advice

Further to our recent updates on the H1N1 swine flu, the College has two important announcements:

First, Australia is entering a new phase of the H1N1 Influenza 09 response, known as PROTECT. The change in approach is because the virus strain is currently not as virulent as anticipated.

Second, please be advised that the College has now had its first confirmed case of H1N1 swine flu in a Year 12 student. We understand that this may cause some ongoing concern amongst the school community.

In light of this, we ask parents to be vigilant in watching for any signs and symptoms of influenza-like illness in your child. These include fever, cough, tiredness, muscle aches, sore throat, chills or shortness of breath. If these symptoms develop please seek the advice of your family doctor and keep your child at home until they are well.

Please find the latest information sheet provided by NSW Health here.

Should you have any further concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our Nurse Unit Manager, Sister Margaret Bates on 9568 9426.

The boys in the Newington 1st XI squad were lucky enough to go through their paces with key Sydney FC team members, including Ivan Necevski and Clint Bolton, as well as Coach, John Filan.

The Newington 1st XI is coached by Director of Football Coaching, Brian Dene, who was recently appointed as Head Coach of the Australian Schoolboys’ Football team. Newington Supports Underprivileged Children in Nepal

Newington College has a strong history of support for the SOS Children’s Villages in Nepal, an organisation which assists orphaned and destitute children. Newington was recently pleased to host a visit by the National Director of SOS in Nepal, Mr Shree Shankar Pradhananga.

Newington’s connection to the SOS International Children’s Villages began when one of the teachers at the College, Mr Michael Davis, visited Nepal in 1995 and was inspired by the work of SOS International.

Since that time, nearly $50,000 has been donated by the Newington community; there have been seven teachers’ exchanges; and a Gap Students’ program has been established, which has seen six Nepalese boys come to Newington since 2004.

The first boy, Sabin Mulepati, was recently accepted into the prestigious John Hopkins Medical School in the USA where he is working on his combined Master/PhD program in bio-medical research. It was Sabin’s time in Australia that encouraged him to think about studying outside of his home country of Nepal. Newington is proud of the influence that it has had on all the wonderful young Nepalese who have come to Australia.

Human Swine Influenza — latest advice from NSW Health

Regarding the school exclusion policy, there has been an important change to the definition of the areas of concern. Any school child returning from an area of "high prevalence" of human swine influenza will be required to stay away from school for seven days after their return to NSW. The Australian Chief Medical Officer will provide a definition for these areas, however, in the interim, greater metropolitan Melbourne should be added to the list of countries previously advised (Mexico, Canada, the United States, Japan, and Panama). This is because of the widespread community transmission of the virus being experienced in Victoria, particularly in the Melbourne metropolitan area.

Click on the link below to open a letter from the NSW Chief Health Officer regarding extended measures designed to reduce the likelihood of swine flu outbreak in NSW and NSW schools.

Swine Influenza letter to principals 04Jun09

A copy of the update from NSW Health is also on the front page of the AIS website at www.aisnsw.edu.au under 'What's New?'

All general enquiries should continue to be directed to the Australian Government's human swine influenza hotline on 180 2007.

Swine Influenza - NSW Department of Health advice

The NSW Department of Health has issued advice, seeking the assistance of schools in identifying children and staff who have recently travelled to Mexico, the USA, Canada, Japan and Panama and requesting that those in this situation be excluded from the school environment for seven (7) days, the maximum incubation period for the virus, to limit the potential exposure of others in the community.

NSW Health also suggest some additional simple precautions:

  • Covering your mouth and nose if you cough or sneeze
  • Washing your hands after contact with soiled tissues or any contact with throat or nose discharge
  • Sick students or staff should stay home until they are fully recovered and seek medical attention if appropriate.
