Nicholas Sharman wins
Most Outstanding Secondary Sportsman Award
14 MARCH 2008
Nicholas Sharman from Newington College won the MJ Punch Award for Most Outstanding Secondary Sportsman in 2007 at the recent NSWCIS Awards Presentation dinner held at Rosehill Gardens Events Centre.
The Award recognises the outstanding sporting achievements, exceptional commitment and dedication of students in CIS Sports. It encompasses a wide range of sports and follows students through Primary and Secondary schooling
“Nick is an outstanding sportsman, equally skilled in Cricket and Football, he also shows genuine leadership qualities but blends well with peers and staff alike, he is what we call an 'all-rounder' student, a real asset to Newington College,” Sportsmaster Graham Potter said.
Adding to his list of accolades, the 17-year-old was also presented with a NSWCIS Blue award during the evening. The prestigious Blue is awarded to the highest achiever in any sport at secondary level. Generally only two awards are presented per gender per sport in any year.
“This year Newington College was proudly represented with four boys receiving a NSWCIS Blue award during the night, more than any other school,” Mr Potter said.
James Clarke received a Blue award for Water Polo while local boys Ian Sarno (Petersham) and Liam Ridings (Haberfield) received theirs for swimming and cross-country.
Ian is no stranger to swimming accolades, having received in June last year a Pierre de Coubertin Award, presented to NSW students who exemplify the Olympic spirit and ideals for sport and sportsmanship.
