Music

A firm foundation for Newington's acknowledged strength in music education is laid within Wyvern House. Music specialists implement a classroom program which encourages a love of musical expression.

A Strings Program operates in Year 3, and a Winds Program in Year 4. These enable students to explore the joys of mastering a musical instrument. Challenging opportunities also include singing in the Chapel Choir or joining a choral group, the orchestra, one of the ensembles, or learning musicianship. In the adjoining music building there are separate sound insulated facilities, and individual music tuition is given by visiting teachers.

Visit the Music Ensembles page for more information.

Sport

All boys attending Wyvern House participate in a sport program. In their early years boys develop their motor skills and coordination, then go on to engage in a range of games in which they learn skills, sportsmanship and team spirit. A Saturday competition with other preparatory schools is arranged for Years 3 to 6.

Sporting activities include swimming (squad and carnivals), athletics, and cross-country running. There are inter-house carnivals and competitions, and skills development training groups.

Outdoor Education

Students in Years 2 to 6 participate in Outdoor Education at camp sites, varying from an overnight stay to a full week. Held early in each School year, this program facilitates general and social development and strongly assists the Peer Support Program. In addition, appropriate leadership skills are developed in a non-competitive context.

The Outdoor Education Program fosters positive peer relations, a sharing of the knowledge of teachers, and a love of, and respect for, the environment.
