Composition at NewingtonFor more information please contact the Head of Music, Mark Scott. Since 2006, Newington has been fortunate to have one of Australia’s foremost contemporary composers, Mr Gerard Brophy, as our Composer in residence. Under his guidance, the creation of music at Newington has made significant leaps forward and is now a vital and exciting aspect of our music program at the College. Selected students work with Mr Brophy during week long residencies spread throughout the year. All senior music students work with Mr Brophy in the preparation of the composition component of the HSC music program. In 2006, a group of eight boys were selected to create pieces that were presented in November as part of a showcase concert. This project, the Gerard Brophy Project, resulted in Newington being a finalist in the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Australian Music in Education’ section of the 2007Australian Classical Music Awards. In 2008, selected students are working on pieces for percussion to be presented at the end of the year. Our students will have the chance to work with members of our Musicians in Residence, Synergy Percussion and with members of TaikOz throughout the preparation process. |
