ENGLISH

Writing

The aim is not only to improve reading and writing skills, but to give emphasis also to oral expression

Welcome to the English Department

English language and literature are at the heart of a sound liberal education and at Newington great emphasis is placed on developing skills in, and a love for, English.

Appropriate literature is introduced and studied at each level. There is a strong and sustained Wide Reading Programme through Years 7 to 10. Film media and multimedia are studied as texts. Writing in different genres is encouraged within the curriculum as well as in co-curricular competitions.

Throughout the school the English courses aim not only to improve reading and writing skills, but to give emphasis also to oral expression, both in formal speaking situations and less formal group discussion.
All boys at Newington study English.

The Head of English at Newington is Mr Sean Corcoran, phone (02) 9568 9361.
