PHILOSOPHY AND RELIGIOUS STUDIES

Religious education

Freedom of thought and academic enquiry are highly valued

Welcome

The Newington Philosophy and Religious Studies Department reflects a broad liberal approach to education in the traditions of the Uniting Church. It aims to:

  • explore Christian beliefs and values
  • develop in students a knowledge and understanding of non-Christian religions and other world-views
  • engage with the religious and moral issues which arise in contemporary society
  • encourage students to explore their beliefs and values
  • nurture a love of ideas and an interest in western and eastern traditions of thought
  • develop critical and creative thinking

Freedom of thought and academic enquiry are highly valued, with many opportunities for student-led investigation. Debate and discussion form a major part of the teaching process. The Department organises a lively program of conferences and special events. HSC students take part in an annual Studies of Religion conference, with students from other schools; there is an annual Theory of Knowledge seminar for IB students; and regular visits from local academics and representatives of faith communities.
