History of Cadets at NewingtonThe Newington College Cadet Unit (NCCU) is one of the oldest Units in Australia, having been formally established in 1869.The Unit was and still remains an important part of the Australian Cadet Corps (ACC). In the early years of this century it became associated with the Australian Regular Army and was known as a fully supported Unit. As a result, the training had a strong military emphasis. In 1975 the Army ceased supporting the ACC and, unable to support themselves, many Units closed down. Newington's Unit continued however, by taking on itself an immense amount of work that had earlier been done by the Army, and with support from the College Council. The Army later resumed its role and from 1977 to 1999 the Unit was a Limited Support Unit, the uniforms, equipment and training all being provided by the College. The current situation is that the Army provides uniforms and equipment, with Newington staff responsible for training and organisation of camps and courses. |
