SENIOR SCHOOL

Students in Years 10 to 12 are encouraged to become more responsible for themselves and to others. This responsibility covers all areas of their personal development and interaction with others.

To assist the boys, 32 tutors and mentors operate in the Senior School. They are lead by eight Heads of House. Each House consists of about 70 boys and four tutor/mentors. Additional support is given by our counsellor Mr Stan Comino and Mr David Phillips as Academic Placement Coordinator. Mr Comino is well known throughout the Newington community and has offered high level support to many boys and their families over a number of years. Mr Phillips will be assisting the boys with a number of academic matters including the requirements of the Board of Studies for senior students.

In Year 10, students are divided into two Mentor Groups per House which follow on directly from Year 9 arrangements. These mentor groups consist of between 10 to 12 boys and enable a high level of individualised care. Year 10 is a time of uncertainty for many students and therefore it is important to meet these needs. The Careers Centre is an extremely valuable resource and Mr Peter Robertson will develop a close working relationship between boys and mentors during this time.

By Year 11 many students are far more independent and are looking for opportunities to grow as a person. In Tutor Groups of about 23 students they are given opportunities such as Peer Support leaders and House Prefects to help them mature. At the same time their tutor and Head of House are offering the appropriate individual support.

Students in Year 12 continue in Tutor Groups and function in a much more independent environment. Many leadership opportunities exist across a range of activities including School, House, Cadets, Sport and other Co-curricular areas. Academic work has the greatest focus across all year groups but as the HSC approaches this focus grows in importance. Student needs at this time and for life after school are key objectives. A well rounded, confident young man who is ready to contribute to the community is the desired outcome of a close, ongoing relationship between school and Home. This is what we are continually working towards.
