Newington v King's 84–48 W

The two undefeated teams in the competition going into this round played in what turned out to be a very physical contest with Newington becoming the victors. Right from the beginning the boys were led by their captain Daniel Hill (30 points and 8 rebounds) who provided great leadership at both ends of the floor. This coupled with Nicholas Kay’s (11 points and 11 rebounds) job on King’s 7-footer was enough to establish a 21-point half-time lead (45–34). The second half saw Newington clamp the King’s offense. During this period Lachlan Urwin (13 points) knocked down two huge 3-pointers to break the game wide open. The last quarter saw the ‘sting’ go out of the game with Newington becoming number 1in the GPS. Honourable mentions: Cameron Stewart 22 points and 8 rebounds, Jack Longstaff and Finlay McDonald for doing all the hard things that do not get stated.

2nds

Newington v King’s 56–42 W

The Newington 2nds moved to 4 and 1 on the season with a 56–42 win over King’s. Newington had a good start and led the game 12–10 after the first quarter behind the solid play of centre Lewis Holey. In the second quarter, Newington sprinted out to a 12-point lead with some solid defence and easy transition layups. King’s went to a zone defence halfway through the second period which took Newington by surprise, and helped King’s claw back to a 1-point half-time lead, 26–25.

In the third quarter, it was all Newington who outscored King’s, 21–9 in the period, and took a commanding 46–35 lead going into the fourth quarter. Oliver Smyth, Sam Yo, Lachlan Shaw and Tom Chard took control of the game with good outside shooting and some smothering defence. Newington extended their lead in the fourth quarter and finished off with a 56–42 win. Lewis Holey led the way with 14 points and 17 rebounds.

16As

Newington v King’s 46–14 W

The 16As had another convincing win on Saturday beating King’s 46–14 to start the season 5–0. The team got off to a fast start, scoring some quick baskets in transition and stepping up the defensive pressure to lead 14–0 midway through the first half. The squad played well against King’s zone defence for most of the game, staying disciplined and within our structure. Unselfish play led to many easy baskets and Hayden Floreani and Christian Scardilli once again dominated inside.

Defensively, the team played well and achieved our goal of holding the opposition to under 20 points for the game. Despite some lapses, overall it was a pleasing effort with Lochlon Peacock, Ashim Joshi and Sinclair Hill all having their best games of the season. Leading Scorers: Hayden Floreani (12 points) and Christain Scardilli (11 points). Man of the Match: Sinclair Hill
