Australian Secondary Schools Fencing Championships 30 September 2009

The grand finale of the fencing calendar, the 2009 Australian Secondary Schools Championship, was held down in Melbourne at the end of September. For the second year running, the Newington Fencing 1sts had secured an invitation to the Schools Teams event in this prestigious competition, through excellent results over the course of the year. Accompanied by the MiC of Fencing, Mr Adam Hellyer, and Coach Simon Jin, Oscar Hargreaves, Joshua Spencer, Tahren Ponussamy and Simon Capon boarded a plane to compete at the Melbourne Fencing Factory, an arena dedicated solely to the art of fencing. The day was long and tiring; we fenced six rounds of 45-hit matches against the leading teams from all over Australia and New Zealand. As the day drew to a close, and the results were tallied, we were notified that we had achieved a fourth place ranking; an excellent effort by all involved.

About Fencing

Who does the coaching?

Mr Simon Jin, one of Australia's foremost coaches in Fencing, is Newington's Coach in this sport. Coaching with Simon happens on Wednesday afternoons from 3.25 to 5.00 and on Saturday mornings from 9.00 to 11.00. An extra Electric Foil Practice is also held on Monday afternoons for Groups 1 and 2 - this practice is for experienced fencers to assist them in preparation for competitions later.

Do I need special equipment?

Fencing

All equipment is provided except for a special Fencing glove which protects the hand during bouts – gloves can be bought through Fencing lessons – a strong gardening glove will do for beginners.

Fixtures

Fixtures are listed on the NSW Fencing web site

Fencers compete in teams of 3 for the State Championship held during Term 2, with other competitions held through Terms 2 & 3. Contests are conducted on Saturdays when schools from all around Sydney gather at Newington to compete. If successful at the State Competition, Fencers may go on to participate in National Competitions. Participating in competitions is a great way to learn new fencing techniques and meet people from other schools.
