From the Sportsmaster

There will be full sporting commitments on Saturday 28 November.

Welcome to Ian Trent and Brian Dene
There has been a change in personnel in the Sports department with Mr Rex Nottage remaining as Director of Basketball Coaching but moving to assist in the building projects. He has been replaced by Mr Brian Dene who now becomes Assistant Sportsmaster in addition to his duties as Director of Football Coaching. Mr Ian Trent expands his portfolio in Water Polo by adding Director of Water Polo Coaching to his duties. I am sure the community will welcome them in their new roles and will assist them with their duties. I look forward to working with these talented staff members and am excited to have their experience and professionalism added to the Sports department.

Saturday 28 November
A reminder that there are full sporting fixtures on Saturday 28 November following the Prize Giving evening. As we have a full GPS round, it is essential that we meet our commitment to this important fixture.

Parking on Saturdays
A security guard will be on duty on Home Game Saturday mornings. Therefore, only persons holding a current car pass will be afforded entry onto the school site. Please keep in mind the neighbours and park with courtesy when parking in nearby streets. In addition, if you arrive early for training or games please respect our neighbours by keeping noise to a minimum.

Holiday Fitness
There will be many camps that are run over the holiday period. These are found within this edition and on the College’s website. It is important that boys remain active over the holiday period. If boys wish to obtain a fitness program, they are most welcome to liaise with Mr Casey Rosman to ascertain the type and level of program suitable to their age and aspirations.

Secondary School Sport

A variety of games are offered in the Secondary School for all boys, Years 7 to 12:

Summer: BasketballCricket; Golf; Rowing; Swimming; Table Tennis; Water Polo

Autumn: Athletics

Winter: Cross-Country Running ; Football; Rugby; Volleyball

All year: Fencing; Judo; Rifle Shooting; Tennis

This wide variety underlines the school's commitment to participation in sport of all boys throughout the year. Boys engaged in other sports at an elite level are likewise encouraged at Newington, by the integration of closely monitored programs, liaison with external coaches and generous leave allowance.

Participation in sport is an important part of a boy's progress through school. Through properly coached and controlled games, a boy learns to win and lose gracefully, acquires skills to increase his enjoyment as participant and spectator, learns self-discipline and team spirit and improves his own physical wellbeing. It is expected that every medically fit boy will play his part in the games program.

In 1992, Newington teams distinguished themselves by winning all eight summer sporting premierships in GPS competition

Newington is always competitive and enjoys a high standard of coaching. In 1992, for instance, Newington teams distinguished themselves by winning all eight summer sporting premierships in GPS competition: 1st/2nd basketball, 1st/2nd cricket, 1st/2nd tennis, 1st/2nd rowing eights - a record never before achieved by any school. In addition, the College swimming relay team won more GPS swimming relays than any other school's team throughout the swimming season. The College has a number of excellent facilities. The PE Centre has an indoor heated swimming pool and weights room and caters for basketball, volleyball, indoor football and so on. Newly constructed all-weather surfaced tennis courts, turf pitches and synthetic practice pitches for cricket and the new Boatshed on the Parramatta River at Abbotsford help to complete the picture.

The playing fields at Stanmore cater for most outdoor games played during the summer and winter seasons.

Newington is one of nine GPS (Great Public Schools) in New South Wales and participates in various GPS sporting competitions, which usually take place on Saturdays during term. The GPS has been overseeing competition between the member schools for over 110 years and has been instrumental in providing the staging ground for many of the state's, and the nation's, fine sportsmen.
